Overview
A university engagement platform helps universities convert prospective students by connecting them with current student ambassadors through chat, content, and live events.
I was brought on as a contract designer to visually redesign the entire product ecosystem – admin dashboard, student-facing widget, and mobile app, working remotely with the product lead to translate complex UX requirements into clean, scalable interfaces across three interconnected products.
Challenge
The existing platform had grown over several product cycles and no longer reflected the needs of university staff.
The team needed a complete visual overhaul that would:
Create a modern, consistent design system across all products.
Handle extremely complex workflows without overwhelming users.
Make the interface intuitive for non-tech-savvy university staff.
Status quo
When I joined, the product had:
A functional but visually dated admin dashboard.
Inconsistent UI patterns across different features.
Poor mobile support despite staff needing on-the-go access.
Complex workflows that felt overwhelming.
Process
The biggest challenge was creating consistency across vastly different use cases – from complex admin workflows to simple student chats. I established a unified design language inspired by the brand.
Dashboard – complete redesign of the university-facing platform. A large part of the work was creating a more intuitive visual hierarchy for heavy datasets: response time metrics, content activity, conversion signals, and ambassador leaderboards. I focused on simplifying the reading flow, reducing clutter, and unifying the components used across the platform.
The redesign extended beyond the dashboard. I created a new visual direction for student-facing products. Widget – embedded component for university websites. And mobile app – community app for prospective students. I redesigned it to feel more social and less administrative, making peer-to-peer connection feel natural rather than transactional.
Results
This project reinforced for me that design impact is often indirect. In this case, engagement growth was driven primarily by the product strategy and the launch of a mobile app. My role as a designer was to build the infrastructure – a consistent component system and scalable UI – that allowed this growth to happen faster and more sustainably.
Platform impact:
3.5x
increase in end-user engagement
Design system built for
2–3 years of scalability
What I Learned
This project strengthened my experience with complex data-driven interfaces and multi-role systems. I refined my ability to build scalable visual hierarchies and translate structured UX into clear, modern UI.
